October 24th is designated as the “International Day of Climate Action”. This day is important to environmentalist all around the world to reflect on what has been done to protect the environment. In Indonesia, to commemorate this event, seminars were held simultaneously in 35 locations on October 23th to expose current conditions of the earth. Center for Environmental Studies in cooperation with The Climate Project Indonesia also held a seminar on Climate Change. The seminar was held at the Library Building 5th floor of the University of Surabaya (UBAYA) and attended not only by students and staffs of UBAYA, but also by representatives from industries, government and non-government organizations (NGOs).

The speaker was Ratu Sofi Arinta MBA., a certified presenter for training materials from Al Gore. She described the causes of climate change and showed photos about the impacts of climate change in several countries, such as Switzerland, USA and Asia Pacific regions to emphasize how serious the conditions are and need for immediate response from everybody. Moreover, sofi explained that every individual or organization can be involved in environmental protection.
At the individual level, self discipline to dispose of garbage at the right place and using electricity sparingly are some simple things which can be done but give significant impacts toward environment quality. At the industrial level, energy and raw material consumption optimization and running production process according to procedures will produce minimal waste. If these things can be done, negative burdens to the environment will be greatly reduced. Government also has important role, especially in the environmental law enforcement. Illegal activities such as illegal logging must be prevented and punished severely considering that forest is one of greenhouse gases’ sinks. At the end of the seminar, Sofi asked all participants to spread the information regarding climate change to everyone, because by caring about our environment we will safeguard our descendants’ future.
